A Weekend with Wildcats, Hawks, and tWitch-Boss

Freshman Steph Ferrell writing to you all after just having returned from Chicago, Illinois for an exciting out-of-conference meet against Northwestern and Iowa. The meet was, as Coach Steph would say, “what sports are all about”. The competition was very evenly matched, which gave us a chance to really work on our “fast tempo finishes” and touch out our competitors. I’m proud to say how surprised the two Big-10 teams were at the unexpected threat the depth of our Ivy League team posed for them. We challenged the two teams all the way to the end, with our meet against Iowa coming down to the very last relay. Full results can be found at http://www.nusports.com/sports/w-swim/stats/2011-2012/jan21resultswomen.html. We were lucky enough to share lunch with family, friends, and local alumni afterwards and even got some of the alumni to share some stories from when Coach Steph was on the team! It was exciting to see crimson and white in the crowd even at a meet far from home.

By somehow managing to dodge the two snowstorms looming during our travel, we made it back to a snowy Cambridge and happened to meet the famous So You Think You Can Dance TV-star, Twitch, along the way on our flight home. This meet wrapped up my first experience with “J-Term”, as we began our second semester of classes on Monday. The upperclassmen certainly did not exaggerate one bit when telling the wide-eyed freshmen about the magical period of alarm-free naps after practice. Unfortunately, such a glorious time of the year had to come to end, but I could not think of a better way to have ended it than swimming a meet with the teammates I have grown so close to. J-term gave me a chance to get to know each one of my teammates that much better and I loved every second of it. This is the first time in my life I have been on a team that has so much personality and drive, and I am so happy to be around such strong, positive women everyday. After learning so much about my team during the past couple of weeks, I could not feel more prepared to tackle the final, and biggest, meets of our season: HYP and Ivies/ECACs. Go Crimson!

HWSD love,

Steph
