Austin, Texas – 40 year old Janet Evans took her first major step forward Friday, as she qualified for this summer’s Olympic trials in the 400 meter freestyle at the Austin Grand Prix.
Evans won her prelim heat with a time of 4:17.27, beating the Olympic trials standard of 4:19.39.
Since announcing her comeback last year, Evans has only competed in Masters’ level competitions. She currently holds Master’s age group world records in the 400 and 800 freestyle events.
Evans was unable to swim in a Grand Prix-level meet until she had been in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency testing program for a year.
