The battlecreekenquirer.com reports that Lakeview High School’s Clay Youngquist was named the Michigan Male High School Athlete of the Year this past Monday night at an awards banquet in Detroit.

By winning this award Youngquist joins an elite group of high school athletes. Past recipients of this award include former Marshall standout quarterback Evan Sharpley, University of Michigan quarterback Drew Henson, and current NBA player Shane Battier.

During his career Youngquist racked up numerous awards and records including: four Division 2 records, four all-classes records, four 18-under age group national records, and multiple All-American honors.

In regards to winning the award Youngquist said, “To be here and to be able to accept this honor in the name of Lakeview just feels awesome. I had no idea that they would pick me, waiting to find out made me really nervous. It's probably the most nerve racking thing I've been through in terms of getting an award. After I won it, I had to go up and answer a bunch of questions in front of everyone. Just wanted to make sure I didn't say anything stupid."

"All the candidates here are all amazing, these are the best athletes in the state of Michigan. All of them are headed off to Division I colleges. Great to be a part of this group of athletes."

This award not only recognizes Youngquist’s athletic accomplishments, but also highlights academic and humanitarian efforts.

Youngquist’s coach Kyle Lott told the Battle Creek Enquirer, “This is incredible. Just look at some of the past winners – Shane Battier, Drew Henson – this is pretty cool. It’s been such a great night, such a great atmosphere. George Blaha was the master of ceremonies, this is such a cool place.”

“This just adds to all of his other accomplishments – you can’t say too much more about all the great things he’s done since he’s been at Lakeview. This is definitely a great way to end a career. He’s ready to go off to college now and start something new.”
