The YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team’s Joe Bonk is this week’s featured swimmer. Joe, a junior in high school, has enjoyed a very successful short course season this year.
At this year’s YMCA Nationals, Joe was a member of five winning relays; three of which broke records along the way.
In this SwimUtopia interview Joe tells us about some of his goals going into this year’s long course season and what his coaches do to help set him up for success in and out of the pool.

What team or teams do you swim for?
I swim for the YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team. Also I swim for Raleigh Charter High School.
What records do you hold for both teams?
Club: 50 Free (20.34) 100 free (44.20)
High School: 50 Free: 20.85 100 free (45.33)
If you are not a high school senior what colleges are on the top of your list as you get closer to making that big decision?
Auburn, Ohio State, Cal Berkeley, Stanford, Virginia Tech
What are some of your goals going into this upcoming long course season?
Make the Junior National Youth Team
What is the biggest meet that you have qualified for so far?
What would you say your biggest accomplishment has been in swimming?
Winning all five Relays at YMCA Nationals this past year and breaking records in three of them.
What are your top times?
50 free- 20.34
100 free- 44.20
200 free- 1:38.88
100 fly- 50.31
What motivates you day in and day out?
Wanting to be the best and hating to lose.
What do your coaches do to help set you up for success in and out of the pool?
Meeting with me consistently to look over my goals in swimming and in life.
What would you say is the hardest practice that you have ever done?
20x100s on 2:00 All out
Do you have any pre-meet or pre-race rituals?
Crossing myself before every big race
What is your favorite pump-up band or artist to listen to before racing?
Either Story of the Year or As I lay Dying (Both Bands)
What are some things that people may not know about you?
I have an extremely goofy side and a serious side, especially when it comes to swimming
