The University of Mary Washington was founded in 1908. The University was named after Mary Washington, who was a famed resident of Fredericksburg and the mother of George Washington. UMW is a co-educational, public institution located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
There are 4,000 undergraduate students at the Fredericksburg campus. U.S. News and World Report ranked them 11th among southern institutions in the “Universities - Master’s” category for their 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges. Forbes.com rated them at the 13th best public college in its annual listing of Americas Best Colleges. They also were featured in the Princeton Review’s 2010 edition of The Best 371 Colleges.
The University of Mary Washington swimming program began in 1974. Over that 36 year period the school has seen 5 head coaching changes. Their current coach is Matt Sellman who began coaching at the school in 2007.
UMW boasts an impressive list of 64 All-American performances at the DIII NCAA Championships. The school competes in the Capital Athletic Conference. At this year’s conference meet the women won their twentieth straight championship title while the men won their tenth straight title.
